An exceptionally pretty 1930s prayer rug from Milas in southwest Anatolia.  A glowing red-pink mihrab on a pale green base is surrounded by bird-like and floral borders.

The all wool construction, the red weft and the diamond-shaped mihrab are all characteristic of the weaving tradition in this area which may have begun as early as the seventeenth century.

Overall even wear.  Unusually for an antique rug, one flatweave end survives. Some loss to the other end and a small hole have been inconspicuously patched on the verso to preserve its structural integrity.

Underlay recommended.
